IP address or hostname

A hostname is resolved first, so this also answers where a domain is hosted.

Public addresses only. Private, loopback and reserved ranges are refused.

Location

Where the address is registered, not where a device is.

Network

The organisation that holds the address.

Nothing looked up yet

Enter an IP address or hostname to see where it is registered and who holds it.

What IP geolocation can and cannot tell you

An address lookup returns where the network block is registered, not where the device physically sits. The two usually agree for a home connection and often disagree for mobile data, corporate VPNs and anything routed through a CDN.

Treat a city-level result as a hint rather than a fact. A result of "Ashburn, Virginia" on a Cloudflare address describes Cloudflare's edge, not the visitor. Accuracy at country level is high; at city level it is a coin toss in many countries.

Reading the network fields

FieldWhat it means
ISPThe organisation holding the allocation for this block, from the regional internet registry.
Reverse DNSThe name published for the address. A missing name is normal and not a fault.
TimezoneThe zone assigned to the block. Useful for spotting an unexpected geography at a glance.
CoordinatesRoughly the centre of the block's coverage, never a device position.

If the ISP field names a hosting provider rather than a consumer ISP, the address belongs to a server. That single observation explains most "why am I seeing a datacenter location" questions.

Hostnames and how they resolve

Entering a hostname resolves it first and then looks up the address, which answers the common question of where a website is hosted. If the answer names a CDN, the origin is hidden behind it and this lookup will not find it.

Private and reserved addresses are refused. An internal address means nothing outside its own network, so a lookup would either fail or return a meaningless result.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is IP geolocation?

Country level is reliable. City level varies by country and provider, and is often wrong for mobile networks and VPNs.

Why does the location not match where I am?

Your traffic is routed through a datacenter, a corporate VPN, or a CDN edge. The block registration is what gets reported.

Can I look up my own IP?

Yes, or use the troubleshoot tool, which reports the address this server sees for your connection.

Why is reverse DNS empty?

Not every address has a PTR record. A missing one is normal, though many mail servers treat it as a mild negative signal.

Does this show the exact street address?

No. Geolocation maps an address block, not a person, and never resolves to a street address.
